One especially severe incident involved filing a return that showed losses for a non-existent home healthcare business, so drastically lowering the client’s tax liability and increasing their refund. This kind of fraudulent activity led to a total loss of over $1.2 million for the IRS.

The legal consequences

Alston’s fraudulent practices were quickly discovered. The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio filed charges against him, and he was eventually apprehended and pleaded guilty. As part of his guilty deal, Alston agreed to pay over $1.2 million in reparations and could face prison time.
